About Vaya Health
Vaya Health is a specialty managed care organization that supports North Carolinians with behavioral health needs, intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in living their best lives.
Based in Asheville, Vaya manages Medicaid, federal, state, and local funding as one of the state’s local management entities/managed care organizations (LME/MCOs). We contract with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to administer an integrated NC Medicaid Managed Care Behavioral Health and I/DD Tailored Plan, an NC Medicaid Direct Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan (PIHP), and Tailored Plan State-funded Services for uninsured / underinsured residents who cannot afford care.
The Vaya Tailored Plan includes Medicaid home- and community-based services available through the 1915(c) NC Innovations Waiver, plus 1915(i) services. Qualifying Tailored Plan and NC Medicaid Direct members are also eligible for Tailored Care Management, a community-based, provider-driven model designed to enhance health outcomes for Medicaid beneficiaries.

We currently operate in 32 North Carolina counties: Alamance, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Caldwell, Caswell, Chatham, Cherokee, Clay, Franklin, Graham, Granville, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Person, Polk, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes, Swain, Transylvania, Vance, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey.

MISSION: Who We Are and Why We Exist
Members are our mission. We manage publicly funded care for individuals with a serious mental health condition, severe substance use disorder, I/DD, and/or TBI, along with the medical, behavioral, and non-medical drivers of their health. We exist to benefit the lives of people with behavioral health, I/DD, and TBI needs and connect them with the services and supports they need to live their best lives – the right care, in the right amount, at the right time.

Communities where people get the help they need to live the life they choose. We are committed to meeting local needs through collaboration with county partners, on-the-ground decision making, creative problem-solving, and consistent follow-through. We focus on listening to each area’s unique needs and developing solutions that will support the best outcomes for the individuals and communities we serve. Our goal is to successfully evolve in the health care system by embracing innovation, adapting to a changing environment, and maximizing resources for the long-term benefit of the people and communities we serve.
